SUMMARY:Death Valley Campout
DESCRIPTION:Host: “eBay” Bob Bencsko\nHost E-Mail: nomad@amcben.com\nHost Phone: (702) 277-3969 \nCo-Host: Vic “Doc” Moss\nHost E-Mail: vjmoss@earthlink.net\nHost Phone: (702) 493-3028 \nCost: $16.00 a night or $8.00 a night with a lifetime pass. Camping is first come/first serve.\nVisitor’s Center Phone: (760) 786-3200\nWebsite: https://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/texas-springs-campground.htm \nAttractions: Death Valley National Park is the lowest\, hottest\, and driest place in North America\,\nalthough heat is not a problem in January. Attractions include Badwater Basin (at 282 feet below sea\nlevel)\, Dante’s View (which has a spectacular view of the valley)\, Scotty’s Castle\, the Ubehebe Crater\,\nand the Racetrack (where rocks seem to move for no reason). Gambling is available in Beatty\, NV\nabout 45 miles away\, and there are several ghost towns or abandoned sites\, in and near the park.\nNote: Due to Hurricane Hillary\, some parts of the park are still inaccessible\, but enough is open to\nmake it worthwhile. Badwater Basin is now a shallow lake\, something that almost never happens\, so\nthe view is a once in a lifetime event. \nDirections: There are many ways into Death Valley\, and all are paved except the road through Wild\nRose Canyon. From the Visitors Center and Furnace Creek Ranch (both on West side of SR190)\, ride\nabout 1/4 mile south. Look on the East side of the road for the turnoff to both Sunset and Texas\nSprings Campgrounds. Ride past the entrance to Sunset Campground\, and up to Texas Springs (the\nroad ends 1/2 mile up) Camp in any site\, but we try to go as far up the campground as possible\, near\nthe restrooms at the top of the campground\, spots 68-76. \nMap: https://goo.gl/maps/wF4WgdfLB58HjAE37.\nGPS Info. (Latitude\, Longitude): 36.4566\, -116.8410 \nElevation and Weather Notes: Furnace Creek is below sea level\, and the campground is only a bit\nhigher. Although Death Valley is very dry\, the park can get occasional rainstorms. Daytime\ntemperatures can range from 40 to 75 degrees\, depending on where you go sightseeing. Nights are\ncold and can drop down to freezing\, so plan accordingly. \nWhat to Bring: Bring a warm sleeping bag or blankets. There is drinking water in the campground\,\notherwise\, bring whatever you need for a great weekend getaway. We’ll have firewood for a campfire\nat our site and will have a hotdogs and chili gathering on Saturday evening. Bring a side dish if you’d\nlike. \nConveniences/Services: The campground has flush toilets\, cold running water\, and decent cell service\,\nbut there are areas in the park that are dead zones. Showers are available at Furnace Creek Ranch\,\nand almost everything is within 1/2 mile\, including fuel and dining. \n  \n

SUMMARY:25th SNOWCAMP - The GRAND FINALE!
DESCRIPTION:  \nAfter a 3-year break due to Covid and other considerations\, Snowcamp will be back this coming January.\nThe last Snowcamp prior to Covid was the 24 th annual one. Covid interrupted plans for the 25th edition\nfor a couple of years. We considered letting it just fade away entirely\, but the question “Whatever\nhappened to Snowcamp?” kept popping up\, and we decided we couldn’t let it end with a whimper. \nSo:\nAnnouncing the 25th Anniversary Snowcamp Grand Finale – January 12-15\, 2024 at the Sahara Creek\nHorse Camp (between Elbe and Ashford on SR 706). For those further away\, that’s in Washington State\,\nnear Mount Rainier National Park. \nIt’s one last chance to be cold and miserable with like-minded fools\, and to do the things Snowcamp is\nknown for. This includes (but is not necessarily limited to): Chicken fried bologna\, beer artillery\, deep-\nfried turkey\, a BIG fire\, more food\, attempts to reach Paradise (you can take that however you want\, but\nwe try to ride there)\, more food\, all manner of motorcycle-related foolishness\, more food\, and (did I\nmention?) A BIG FIRE! Area 51 may make an appearance again\, if we can still figure out how to put it\ntogether. And\, this being the GRAND FINALE\, there may be a surprise or two\, you never know with\nSnowcamp. \nOfficially\, there’s a chili feed Friday evening and a pancake breakfast each morning\, but there’s always\nlots of other food. We never know exactly what since that depends on what’s brought\, but we’ve never\ngone hungry. We now have both an infrared and a deep-fat turkey fryer\, so there will be a comparison\nfry-off for sure. The event turns into a giant potluck\, food contributions are appreciated but not\nrequired. \nThe event itself is FREE. However\, the Horsecamp venue is a Washington Dept. of Natural Resources\n(DNR) property\, so a Discover Pass is required for all vehicles. It is $11.50 for the day and $35.00 for the year.Experience indicates that someone will come through and check for them. The fine for not having one is $99\, so it’s much better to get the pass\nrather than the ticket. Passes are available online and at local vendors. Get more info at www.discoverpass.wa.gov. \nWe don’t care if you come by bike\, car\, motorhome or Starship Enterprise\, we just want you to BE THERE! The Horsecamp has lots of room. Since it’s close to Mt. Rainier\, there are also numerous lodging opportunities for the less-hardy available in the general vicinity. \nWhat to bring – warm clothes\, tent\, camper\, or other sleeping facility\, food\, drink\, and (if you have a vehicle with enough room) some firewood. Firewood will be provided\, but we can always use more – we like BIG FIRES. \nFor more information\, contact:\nRolf-Immo Gabbe – rolfgabbe@yahoo.com\, 253-770-3749\nJoe Rogers – 253-312-5810
